The 1st Executive Board Meeting of CONSAL XVIII, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 21 – 22 June 2019
Cambodia is very pleased to become the host of the 18th Congress of Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL). It is the first time that the country hosted CONSAL since its interception in 1970. The leadership team of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MCFA) strongly supports the National Library of Cambodia and the Cambodian Library Association in hosting this important regional library event.
On 21-22 June 2019, Cambodia held the 1st Executive Board Meeting of CONSAL XVIII. There were around 80 participants, including the Executive Board members of the 10 ASEN countries, prominent librarians in the country and leadership members of MCFA, attended the meeting. The meeting was opened by the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts.
The meeting aimed to prepare for the organization of the CONSAL XVIII conference, to share the progress of libraries and librarianship in each country and to find ways to promote better collaboration among libraries in the region. It was a productive meeting. The participants were very engaging. As a result of the meeting, the board members chose “Libraries for all: Opportunities for Change” as the theme of the CONSAL XVIII. They also decided to pick Siem Reap as the conference site in 2021. One of the important agenda’s items discussed was whether or not CONSAL should be under the umbrella of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The board members agreed that it will be a good idea to make CONSAL be part of ASEAN. But before doing that, the board members planned to strengthen CONSAL by reviewing its constitution and commit to comply with it. On another important agenda’s item, the board members also planned to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CONSAL by organizing various activities as an individual country and as the region. The celebration will begin at the beginning of 2020 and end at the CONSAL XVIII Conference in middle of 2021.
