The European Union is looking to establish what sort of response, if any, should be made to the phenomenon of 'fake news' on the Internet. With some countries having decided to introduce efforts to ban it (with a high possibility of unintended consequences), the need to make the case for media and information literacy – and the role of libraries in delivering this – is urgent.

IFLA will attend this colloquium, organised by the European Commission, in order to underline the work of libraries in the field, and argue that time and effort should be invested in skills, not in disproportionate regulation of speech online.
